Saskatchewan is at the forefront of boosting oil production while prioritizing sustainability. As part of the provincial Growth Plan, the Government of Saskatchewan has set an ambitious target to increase oil production from 430,000 barrels per day to 600,000 barrels per day by 2030. This growth will be driven by advanced technologies such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods, including steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), which allow for more efficient resource extraction with a lower environmental impact.
One key initiative is the introduction of a multi-lateral well drilling program. This innovative approach increases access to oil reservoirs with fewer surface disturbances and minimal water usage, positioning Saskatchewan as a leader in responsible energy development. The program is expected to add up to 200 new wells annually, attracting investment, creating jobs, and supporting sustainable growth in the oil sector.
Additionally, the province is investing in crucial infrastructure projects such as pipeline expansions, which will facilitate increased oil exports while reducing reliance on road transport, lowering both emissions and costs. The Oil Infrastructure Investment Program (OIIP) is one such initiative, offering incentives to expand pipeline capacity, supporting the provincial economy, and enhancing energy independence.
Saskatchewan’s commitment to regulatory excellence ensures that oil and gas exploration and development are conducted responsibly, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impact and increasing efficiency. These efforts will not only meet rising global demand but also support the province’s long-term economic and environmental sustainability goals.
